WTF Is Shadow Work? Why It’s Been The Key to My Healing and Leveling Up

The past decade of my life has been anything but boring. It’s been a whirlwind of hard truths, unexpected lessons, and moments of clarity that reshaped how I see myself and my place in the world. Spoiler alert: it all led me here, talking to you about shadow work.
In Japan, there’s an art form called kintsugi, where broken pottery is mended with gold. The cracks aren’t flaws—they’re stories. They symbolize resilience, transformation, and the beauty of imperfection. To me, this perfectly reflects the essence of shadow work.
Shadow work isn’t about “fixing” yourself because—newsflash—you’re not broken. It’s about looking at the parts of yourself you’ve hidden away—the pain, the fears, the doubts—and realizing that these so-called “cracks” hold the potential for your greatest growth. When you embrace them, you don’t just heal; you transform into something stronger, more vibrant, and deeply whole.
This is what shadow work has taught me—not through reading about it, but through living it. Every scar, every challenge, every crack has shaped who I am today. And just like kintsugi, the magic isn’t in hiding those experiences; it’s in integrating them and owning them as part of your story. That’s where the real beauty lies.
The Search for Meaning
My shadow work journey started with a deep desire to understand myself. Over the years, I’ve tried it all: yoga, reiki, acupuncture, plant medicine, psychedelics (more on that in another post), and even questioning the role of religion in my life.

Early in my teens, I started poking holes in religion, trying to find something that felt authentic to me. Buddhism, with its focus on compassion and inner stillness, came closest, but I never adopted it as a “religion.” Instead, I let my curiosity lead me deeper into spirituality—what it is, how it works, and how it differs from religion.
I’ve always known there’s something bigger than us—call it Spirit, the Universe, Source, whatever. It’s this vast, connective force that ties us to the rhythm of the cosmos. This knowing is what pulled me into exploring not just spirituality but my own inner workings.
WTF Is Shadow Work?
So, let’s get to it: What the hell is shadow work, and why should you care?
Shadow work is the process of facing the parts of yourself you’ve buried, denied, or flat-out avoided. These are the pieces of your personality and experiences you’ve decided are too messy, unworthy, or downright unacceptable.
The “shadow,” in psychology terms, refers to the darker, hidden side of your personality. It’s made up of the parts of yourself you suppress because they don’t fit the version of you that you (or society) think you’re supposed to be.
For example, have you ever:
Judged someone’s outfit, only to realize later it’s because you fear being judged yourself?
Called someone “lazy” or “careless,” only to realize that’s how you feel about yourself deep down?
Our shadows aren’t just the “bad” stuff. They’re also the gold we’ve buried—qualities like independence, sensitivity, or confidence that we’ve been shamed out of showing. Think of your psyche as a house: shadow work is going into the basement and shining a flashlight on all the boxes you shoved down there.
Why Shadow Work Matters
If you’ve been feeling stuck, triggered, or like life just isn’t hitting the way it should, shadow work might be the missing key.
Here’s what it’s done for me (and what it can do for you):
Break free from patterns: Shadow work helps you identify and dismantle behaviors that keep you stuck.
Heal emotional triggers: No more spiraling every time someone pushes your buttons.
Step into your authenticity: When you own your shadows, you also own your light.
It’s not easy. But trust me, when you start clearing out that dusty basement, you’ll feel lighter, freer, and more aligned with who you truly are.
Why I Chose This Path
Shadow work has been one of the most transformative parts of my life. It’s not about fixing anything or becoming someone new—it’s about meeting yourself fully, with honesty and compassion, and realizing that even the parts you’ve hidden or ignored hold incredible value.
Through this process, I’ve discovered clarity, alignment, and a sense of freedom I didn’t know was possible. I’ve felt the shift from being lost and disconnected to fully stepping into a life that feels real, expansive, and uniquely mine.
I share this work because I believe in it deeply. The rewards on the other side of this journey are worth every step. If my experiences resonate with you, know that this path is open to you too—and I’m here to walk alongside you, as a fellow traveler and guide when you need one.
Step Into Your Light
Your shadows aren’t here to hold you back—they’re here to teach you, to nudge you, to wake you up to the parts of yourself you’ve been ignoring or hiding. Every moment of doubt, every fear, every so-called flaw—they’re all chapters in the story that brought you here. And the best part? You get to rewrite the narrative from this point forward.
This process isn’t about perfection; it’s about exploration. It’s about being curious, getting real with yourself, and asking: What parts of me am I finally ready to embrace? What truths have I been too scared to admit? This is where the magic happens—when you start seeing yourself for all that you are, and loving the parts you once thought were too messy or complicated.
